FAQ

Questions you might have

Whether you are a student, parent, or teacher, here are answers to common questions about joining and taking part in our community.

Important Note

Victoria Math Circle is a student-led collaborative math community and contest exploration platform, not a private tutoring or homework help service. We focus on deep mathematical reasoning, creative problem-solving, and peer discussion.

What is the Victoria Math Circle (VMC)?

VMC is a student-led platform dedicated to bringing middle and high school students across Greater Victoria together to explore advanced mathematics, tackle competition-level problems, and build a collaborative problem-solving community. Learn more on our About Us page.

Who can join our sessions?

Any Grade 8–12 student in Greater Victoria with a curiosity for math is welcome! Whether you are preparing for major math contests or simply enjoy solving challenging puzzles beyond the school curriculum, there is a place for you here.

How do I become a member, and are there any fees?

Membership is 100% free with no formal application required. Simply drop by any of our upcoming in-person workshops or join our official Discord server to get started!

Do I need prior experience in contest math?

Not at all. Our workshops break down complex contest techniques into accessible, step-by-step concepts. We focus on multiple logic perspectives, and sharing and connecting with other math enthusiasts, not just speed or scores.

What happens during a typical workshop session?

Each session focuses on a specific topic (such as Algebra, Number Theory, or Geometry). We combine structured problem analysis, open discussion, and collaborative group solving, followed by take-home challenges. Check out our Math Circles page or our Upcoming Events page for detailed session breakdowns.

Which competitions do you support preparation for?

We offer problem sets and strategy guidance aligned with major Canadian and international contests, including the Waterloo contests, COMC, AMC 10/12, and AIME, etc.

Can parents or educators attend?

While our sessions are tailored for active student discussion, parents and teachers are always welcome to observe or get in touch with our team via email regarding community collaborations.

How can students contribute to the VMC community?

You can share your solution drafts in our Discord (#solution-share), present an alternative approach during sessions, or submit challenge problems. Selected solutions are published in our open-source GitHub archive with full credit!
